The Blessing of the Hounds
Saturday, December 8. 2018 at 11am
The Blessing of the Hounds is a tradition that goes back a long way. The religious service was first begun in 8th century France by St. Hubert, the patron saint of hunters.
According to author Diana L. Guerrero, in the book Blessing of the Animals, “English hunters popularized this ritual and
brought the custom to the American colonies in the 17th century.” Grace Church, founded in 1745 when Virginia was an English
colony, is said to be the first church in America to institute the service.
Members of the hunt are attired in full livery and mounted on horses, and surrounded by a pack of foxhounds. The blessing
consists of prayers for the protection of the hounds and hunters, and thanks for the harvest. The Prayer “for the horses to be
surefooted, the hounds to be swift and disciplined, and the foxes to be fleet of foot and elusive.”
The Loudoun Hunt will hold their service December 8, 2018 at 11:00 am at Dry Mill Vineyards & Winery. Everyone is welcome to participate in the ceremony. After the ceremony, the public is welcome to pet the hounds and take pictures. At 12 p.m. the Hunt will demonstrate the hunt on the hillside back of the winery.
The Winery will be open from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. for sales of wine, slushies, mulled cider, mulled wine cider and a
kid sized portion of non-alcoholic mulled cider.
